Still not dead! Slowly reviving.

I got caught up in playing World of Warcraft again. My main character is at her maximum level though, and there isn’t too much to do with her besides PvP and raid, and I really only do that on the weekends.

I recently got a library card, and like the silly girl I am, I put a lot of books on my hold list, only to be shocked as they all came to the library at once. It’s a great way to check out stuff I want to read, but not necessarily pay for though, and a good way to catch up on the seemingly hundreds of Diana Wynne Jones books I haven’t read yet.

Without further ado, some microreviews:

To Terra, volume 1 by Keiko Takemiya (manga)

This is a classic shoujo title by one of the famed year 24 group, a sci-fi epic where an underground group of psychic humans called Mu are trying to find a place to live. Humans live in strictly regulated environments on other planets since they polluted Earth beyond any ability to heal. The solution was to ship humans off to other colonies and wait for the Earth to heal herself. The goal of the Mu is to go back to Terra.

The art is beautiful and I really got into the story, although I’m not much for science fiction. I was crushed to learn my library doesn’t have volume 2. It does have volume 3 though. Weird.

The Game by Diana Wynne Jones (young adult novel)

This was a short novel by Diana Wynne Jones about a young girl who has to spend time with her extended family. Her fellow nieces and nephews engage in what they call “the game,” which I’m not entirely clear on, but it seems to involve dimension hopping. I personally think the story is a lot more confusing if you don’t understand the mythological and celestial references.

Eight Days of Luke by Diana Wynne Jones (young adult novel)

Eight Days of Luke is somewhat the same as the Game, if you don’t understand the references to Norse mythology, you really are missing out on some of this book. It’s the story of a young man who summons “Luke.” He then goes about attempting to help Luke prove his innocence to Luke’s family who all emerge one by one.

Santa Olivia by Jacqueline Carey (science fiction novel)

Santa Olivia is an alternate history of America, with genetically enhanced soldiers and pockets of the country that are closed off from the outside world and forgotten. Loup Garron is the child of an enhanced soldier, and one of the civilians of Santa Olivia, also known as the Outpost. She has the same physical characteristics as her father, as well as his lack of any kind of fear, and she learns to fake her way through life without drawing too much attention. However, she becomes an orphan and starts going after some of the soldiers of Outpost in retaliation for their acts, under the moniker “Santa Olivia.” With no other alternative, she stages a daring attempt to escape Outpost once and for all.

This book has some good pacing. The introduction seemed a little long and slow, but it really was necessary to set Loup up. Once her story got rolling, I had a hard time putting this one down.

Colman by Monica Furlong (young adult novel)

Colman is the last third of the Doran trilogy. I’d read Wise Child and been interested in where it went, but I was dismayed to find that Colman is the last part of the trilogy. However, the second part, Juniper, is actually a prequel giving background to Wise Child’s teacher.

Colman helps Wise Child and Juniper escape from the village they’d lived in, and they meet up with Wise Child’s father Finbar. He takes them on his ship and they end up confronting Finbar and Juniper’s old nemesis. It’s a pretty satisfying ending to the series. I really wish there was more, but unfortunately Monica Furlong passed away.

Weekly update Sunday edition! and NaNoWriMo

I’m getting lax on the blog posts again.  Luckily my basic schedule of posting is pretty flexible.  I do plan on doing some kind of regular weekly post, but I’ve not nailed down what exactly I’m going to post weekly.  I recently tried to take pictures of a figure for a figure review post, but that didn’t go so well.  I think I may need a better camera for that.

I’m likely to be pretty lax on blog posts this month, because I SHOULD be writing for NaNoWriMo.  Whether I’ll be successful is pretty up in the air, especially as I’m falling far short of the daily goal of 1,667 words.  I have around 200 so far, and it’s more summary than story.  I have resolved to just try to roll with it so far, after all I might just need that summary around to remember where I’m going with my story.  If you’re interested, here’s a link to my profile: http://www.nanowrimo.org/eng/user/400170

In other updates, I finally finished reading Kushiel’s Mercy.  Boy that took a long time to read.  I did enjoy but I didn’t really get sucked into the story.  It seems more that I finished it  out of determination to have it read.  I’m now reading the Gospel of the Flying Spaghetti Monster, which I’m finding to be hilarious.  It’s entirely too quotable for me.

I’ve also found the anime this season I will be keeping up with: Kimi ni Todoke.  The protagonist is a shy girl who scares her classmates with her resemblance to Sadako from the Ring.  She’s trying to get to know the people around her and make friends, and as a shy person, she’s hitting all the right buttons with me.  I am still that awkward with people.  It doesn’t ring as the cliche usually goes of the shy girl suddenly being noticed as cute/gorgeous and becoming popular or that the way she is just disappears conveniently like it’s some kind of disease or something.  This last episode, number 4 is particularly wrenching with all the misunderstanding and sadness going on.  It’s very rare that anime brings me to tears, and this episode very nearly did.  I’m going to be hoping as hard as I can that this gets licensed and brought over to the States.  And as a sort of disclaimer: yeah, I watch this fansubbed.  I did look for streaming and didn’t find any, so fansubs.  I’m going to be picking up the second volume of manga as soon as I get paid this week.

Must be detecting my iron will

Hey, I’m back to schedule.  Woo!

Last week being a holiday week, I really didn’t get up to much.  I have finished my Jasdero cosplay for Anime Festival Wichita, which is this weekend.  Just in time.  I’ll probably post pictures next Monday.  Let me just tell you all that gray makeup is going to be a pain to put on.  I think it’ll be worth it though.  I’ll sure find out.

I’ve practically sprinted through two Jacqueline Carey books, Kushiel’s Chosen and Kushiel’s Avatar, finishing up Phedre’s story.  Which reminds me, I need to go back and correct that last post, I put in the wrong title.  Now I’m on Kushiel’s Scion, beginning Imriel’s story.  I really do like him.  He’s not the same as Phedre of course, but who could be?  If you’re wondering why I’m reading the series over again it’s because I recently found the last Imriel book in paperback and just want to be up on the story before I read that one.  I really enjoy reading these books, but because of the sheer density of story, it usually takes a while.

I’m also going to be giving Janet Evanovich a try.  My book buddy at work highly recommends her to the point that she’s lent me one of her Stephanie Plum novels so I’ll probably read that about the same time I’m reading these Jacqueline Carey books.  It won’t be the first time I’ve been in the middle of multiple books at once.

As far as anime right now, I’m currently watching Gintama (still) and re-watching Ergo Proxy.  Embarassingly I did fall asleep during an episode of Ergo Proxy today, but that was more due to me already being sleepy and in bed.  I find that cuddling up to watch something is not necessarily such a good idea sometimes.  If you’re wondering how far I am on Gintama, I think I’m up to episode 24.  I have a long way to go, but I do tend to watch two or three episodes at a time and I prefer it this way actually.  It’s just what I do with podcasts.  I’ll load up a podcast and if I get hooked, that will be most of what I listen to for however long it takes me to catch up, then I eagerly wait for new episodes.  I also hope that new episodes come out regularly because I don’t pay attention to any kind of release schedule until I’m caught up.

I have also been indulging in the nostalgic feeling of playing Final Fantasy 7 on my PS3.  Unfortunately I didn’t manage to get Don Corneo to pick Cloud.  Interestingly I only remember all the things you need for him to pick Cloud from watching my brother obsessively go back again and again until he got all the right items to be chosen.  Besides enjoying the game again, once I got used to the old controls, it really makes me wish Square would hurry and release a remastered version.  This is after playing all the way through Crisis Core and watching Advent Children Complete.  I would love just an updated version with new graphics.
