  • Claymore – Final Thoughts

I finished watching Claymore a few weeks ago.  I haven’t read the manga at all, but I did already know that there was some raging over the ending.  The impression I got is that the anime closed a door that the manga left open, and I can see how that would be irritating.

I found the ending irritating without even having read the manga.  I’m not going to spoil much of anything, because I think Claymore is still fairly new, and if you wanted to spoil it, you could go look it up elsewhere.  I will completely admit to being lazy.

As you may know from earlier posts, I initially did not like Claymore much, but I kept watching it anyway.  As the series went on, I found myself gradually drawn into the story.  By episode 8, I was fully invested in the series.  I’ll readily admit that I still find the supporting cast more interesting than Claire, the main character.

The ending seemed rushed though.  There was no real resolution, and the big bad just shrugged and walked away.

Also, a petition for a second season of Claymore has been started by enterprising fans.  I went ahead and signed, figuring, hey it could be alright.  I’m not exactly sure where Claymore could go from it’s end, but it was an open ending.  The big bad could easily be the main villain again, and chaos can ensue.  I haven’t read the manga, and honestly I doubt I’ll get to it any time soon as I have plenty of manga I’m keeping up with already, and I tend to read shoujo slice of life drama/romance over action manga.

In conclusion, if you’d like to see a good action anime with women that kick ass, watch Claymore.  There’s plenty of action there, and pretty decent story to go along with it.  The ending is pretty meh though.

You may have read some of my negative thoughts on Claymore in an earlier post.  Mostly I’m still very puzzled as to why I have no real fondness for an anime that I’ve heard so much good things about.  As my boyfriend would tell me though, there’s no accounting for taste or lack thereof. :P

So why am I still watching Claymore?  Well for one, I HAVE seen worse, so it’s not like that’s a big deal really.  I do like the animation, mostly it’s beautiful with a few missteps.  I also love the soundtrack.  At first it seemed really weird and out of place, but it’s grown on me.

The anime’s grown on me some too.  At last, after 8 episodes in, I’m drawn in enough that I do want to know what happens next.  I’m not sure that buddy of mine actually has the whole series though :/ Might have to pester her for more.  It still won’t make my list of favorites or must-watches though.

It’s also not the first well-loved anime I haven’t liked either.  Last Exile seems like it’s pretty well-received on the whole, and while I enjoyed the characterization, I didn’t actually enjoy the anime as a whole.  Maybe it’s just me.

  • Do you fight or bore them with talking?

At the request (sort of) of a friend, I’m watching Claymore, and I’ve heard lots of good things about it.  However.  I hope some more happens soon, cause the series is kinda boring to be quite honest.  Don’t get me wrong, I love some action anime, but there isn’t terribly much action at the moment, just a lot of talk.  And two annoying characters.  Theresa is a self-important windbag and Rocky just needs to die.

I did watch some more One Piece and to my dismay I like it quite a bit.  To my dismay, because that now means I will be seeking out the boxsets to be able to watch more.  Something’s gotta keep all that Naruto and Saiyuki company.

I finished re-reading Kushiel’s Scion, and am taking a break from that series in order to read another Janet Evanovich book (leant by coworker), and then a Terry Pratchett book so I can watch this movie that’s sitting and gathering dust.

That’s it besides re-reading my Love*Com manga so I can do a podcast about that, and re-watching the Love*Com movie.  I probably won’t be hitting on the anime much because I’m lazy and that’s too much trouble at the moment.  That’s next week though.  Tomorrow I’ll be reviewing Tokyo Babylon, and talking about whatever else I can think of.  ‘Til then!
